101 Gadgets that Changed the World

I watched this on the History Channel last night and thought it was pretty cool. It was 101 Gadgets that Changed the World by Popular Mechanics Magazine.

The alarm clock. The personal computer. The smartphone. The radio. You know the greatest gadgets of all time (and you’ve probably owned most of them), but which has changed the world more than any other? To make our list of 101, a gadget had to be something you could hold in your hands, mechanical or electronic, and a mass-produced personal item. The rest was up to the judges.

Here's the top 20.

20. Remote Control
19. Brownie Point and Shoot Camera
18. Vacuum Cleaner
17. Handheld GPS
16. Transistor Radio
15. Modem
14. Typewriter
13. Match
12. Bicycle
11. Dry Cell Battery
10. Light Bulb
9.  Alarm Clock

8.  Phonograph
7.  Telephone
6.  Portable Air Conditioner
5.  Personal Computer
4.  Hypodermic Syringe
3.  Television
2.  Radio
1.  SmartPhone

Not sure I agree with everything, but it sure made for an interesting debate. I'm not exactly sure how a Match is an electronical or mechanical device???

  1. Cool list, but yeah, match really doesn't fit the definition of electrical or mechanical, but I know I'd be lost without it! I mean, make fire with only two sticks...right. LOL

  2. lol! Yeah, that's true. There were several things they listed I was like...duh, that's an appliance not a gadget. I mean...a television? An air conditioner? It's not here, but #101 on the list was duct tape? Come one, a gadget?

  4. Cool list. But, yeah, a match. That doesn't fit, even if you mechanically strike it. Transistor radios radically changed the culture at the time, and helped bring a whole new era of music.

I like Serena's title much better. And, absolutely duct tape or duck tape is a life saver at times.
